Installing a Solar Power System is an Investment
But it has a great return. With increasing farm power costs, solar energy can help offset these expenses.
Regardless of whether your farm focuses on dairy, sheep and beef, horticulture, or viticulture, utilising solar energy is an effective and environmentally friendly way to reduce your power costs while boosting your production rates—essentially allowing you to produce more at a lower price.
Solar power can be used to operate a variety of systems on your farm, from livestock sheds to electric fences, while also lowering your monthly electricity bills.
It has been shown that solar power can reduce daytime grid power consumption by up to 70%, which significantly decreases network charges.
Additionally, by adopting solar energy, you’ll contribute to improving the agricultural industry’s environmental reputation by reducing carbon emissions, an increasingly important issue for all farmers in New Zealand. This means that while you increase your productivity, you won’t be increasing your environmental impact.
What Size System Do You Need?
You may be curious about the typical size of a solar system on a dairy farm. Each farm is unique, and we customise our systems to meet specific requirements.
However, we generally consider larger dairy sheds that accommodate around 800 to 1,000 cows during milking. This results in an average monthly operating cost of $2,000 to $3,000, which translates to approximately 200 to 400 kWh per month.
With this in mind, we recommend a 30 kW solar system for most rotary dairy sheds. This system can produce an average of 150 to 200 kWh during peak milking months. Ultimately, this equates to an average reduction of 50% to 70% in power consumption during daylight hours.
